Mesothelioma Syndrome [mez-uh-thee-lee-oh-muh] is a form of cancer in which cancerous cells that are found in the mesothelium, a protective sac that covers most of the body’s internal organs. In most studies they found that people who work or worked on jobs with industrial products such as, cement, brake linings, roofing shingles, flooring products, insulations, and or textiles. If you inhale the tiny particles floating in the air or you swallow the asbestos particles. Reported cases in the past 20 years have increased. Mesothelioma is still a relatively rare cancer. In the United States new cases are diagnosed and about 2,000 people per year have the disease. Mesothelioma occurs in men more than women, but the disease can appear in both men and women at any age.

Mesothelium is the membrane that covers most of the internal organs. It’s composed of layers of cells. The first layer immediately covers the organs. The other layer forms a sac around it. The mesothelium produces a fluid that releases lubricates between these layers, allowing the lungs contract, heart to beat and expand against adjacent structures. Mesothelium has different names, depending on it location. The pleura is the membrane that surrounds the lungs and lines the chest cavity wall. The peritoneum is the mesothelial tissue that covers the male reproductive organs, called tunica vaginalis testis. The tunica serosa uteri covers the internal reproductive organs for women.

Mesothelioma symptoms may not appear until 30 to 50 years after being exposed to the asbestos. You may have shortness of breath and chest pain due to an accumulation of fluid in the pleura. They are symptoms of pleura Mesothelioma. In some cases you have weight loss, abdominal pain and swelling from the fluid buildup in the abdomen. If the cancer spreads beyond the mesothelium to other parts in the body you may have symptoms of swallowing, swelling of the neck or face, and pain.

It is often difficult to diagnose, because these symptoms are often similar to a number of different conditions. The doctor will undergo a complete physical examination, x-rays, CAT scan, or an MRI. A biopsy will be needed to confirm the diagnosis of Mesothelioma. If the biopsy comes back and you have the disease then the doctor will want to learn the stage or extent of the cancer. By staging the disease involves more testing and lets the doctor know exactly what stage and where the cancer is in the body or if it has spread. Then it helps the doctor to determine the treatment plan.

The treatments used for Mesothelioma depends on the amount and location of the cancer. The doctor may suggest surgery, radiation therapy, or chemotherapy.

If you feel you come in contact with asbestos and have any of these symptoms, it is important that you see your doctor.
